Fortran is one of the oldest high-level programming languages still in active use and remains a cornerstone of scientific, engineering, and high-performance computing (HPC) software in critical applications areas, such as climate and weather prediction, aerospace, nuclear energy, computational physics, and national security. Fortran provides several features that are particularly well-suited for scientific and high-performance computing, including intrinsic multidimensional array operations, native array slicing and whole-array syntax, built-in support for numerical computation, explicit parallel programming constructs, and language-level facilities for efficient vectorization and mathematical optimization. Recently, the Fortran community has shown growing interest in secure software development practices, vulnerability prevention, and secure coding standards. The SEI CERT Coding Standard for Fortran leverages expertise in secure coding practices and provides well-documented and enforceable coding guidelines to audit Fortran software.

🠶 David Svoboda is a software security engineer at the CERT Division of the Software Engineering Institute. He co-authored or contributed to four books, including The SEI CERT C Coding Standard and The CERT Oracle Secure Coding Standard for Java. He also maintains the SEI CERT Coding Standards wiki and has taught Secure Coding in C and C++ all over the world to various groups in the military, government, and banking industries. Svoboda is also involved in several ISO standards groups, including the JTC1/SC22/WG14 for standardizing C and the JTC1/SC22/WG21 for standardizing C++.


🠶 Manuel Arenaz is the founder of Codee and a Professor at the University of A Coruña (Spain). His work focuses on advancing compiler and static analysis technologies for Fortran and C/C++ using the LLVM ecosystem. He leads the development and maintenance of the Codee Open Catalog of code guidelines that help developers build software that is more secure, correct, portable, modern, and efficient. Arenaz also actively collaborates with the SEI CERT Coding Standard for Fortran initiative to define secure coding guidelines and best practices to improve the reliability, safety, and maintainability of Fortran software.
