CSD Alum Receives AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award Friday, September 26, 2025 CSD alum Gabriele Farina has received the 2023 AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award, which recognizes outstanding research and writing in artificial intelligence.Gabriele Farina has received the 2023 AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award, which recognizes outstanding research and writing in artificial intelligence.Established by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (ACM SIGAI), the award is presented annually at the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Farina, who earned his doctorate in computer science from the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University in 2023, will be honored in a special AAAI-26 session with recipients from 2022 and 2024. The program will return to annual announcements next year. For his dissertation, "Game-Theoretic Decision Making in Imperfect-Information Games: Learning Dynamics, Equilibrium Computation and Complexity," Farina developed theoretical and algorithmic foundations for strategic decision-making in negotiations and in imperfect-information, extensive-form games such as poker. His work explored the computation of equilibria, the role of learning in these processes and the implications of introducing human players into the models.Farina completed his doctoral studies under Tuomas Sandholm, the Angel Jordan University Professor of Computer Science. He is now an assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For more information, visit the AAAI website.Media ContactAaron Aupperlee | 412-268-9068 | aaupperlee@cmu.edu
