Why your meetings matter: Group interaction dynamics during meetings

Meetings are an important space for group collaboration. They significantly shape human experience and behavior in the work context. 

This talk will provide a brief overview of the interdisciplinary field of meeting science and highlight key findings on interaction patterns that drive meeting effectiveness. Next, I will share findings from interdisciplinary work at the intersection of psychology and computer science that aims to automatically detect group dynamics in workplace meetings, such as dynamic group cohesion and dynamic affect during group meetings. Finally, I will provide a glimpse into  ongoing research leveraging virtual reality for more immersive meeting experiences.

Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock is professor and department head of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Director of the Center for Better Work, and Vice Dean of Research and Transfer at the Faculty of Psychology and Human Movement Science, University of Hamburg (Germany). She studies behavioral patterns that explain successful collaboration in organizational teams (preferably observed in the field during regular workplace meetings), among leaders and followers, in coaching sessions, and during business negotiations. Her research program blends organizational psychology, management, communication, and social signal processing. 

Her research has been published in outlets such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Academy of Management Journal, The Leadership Quarterly, Organizational Research Methods, and Small Group Research.
